Biloxi 2012!

Category: Reunion – Ron Yorkovich 12:00 am

 April 21, 2012 Update

Food

For Saturday night there is a selection of any of 4 entrees

  • Prime Rib
  • Petite Filet mignon
  • Chicken Saltibocca
  • Flounder stuffed with crabmeat

They all sound great! In order to help the hotel plan, please email gbc82abnvn@aol.com with a preference by Sunday. We’ll do our best to have your first choice but if not choose a second one at the table.

Transportation

The hotel has 1 shuttle van and will provide it if it is available. The ride from the airport to hotel is about 20 minutes so their may be a wait. Since their are so few flights into Biloxi, the shuttle may be there already when you get there.  If not call 800-747-2839.  Look for Treasure Bay Casino and Hotel on the van.

If the van is not available, a taxi is $25 to $30.  For those fishing, we’ll get you to the pier.

 April 18 2012 Update

  1. If you haven’t made your hotel reservation please do so immediately.
  2. Same thing for your registration.
  3. There are about 10 slots open for the New Orleans trip.
  4. There is 1 slot open for the Wednesday fishing trip. Charlotte and Rick will get us to the pier. Register for either or both now.
  5. Friday evening is business casual- a very nice buffet.
  6. Saturday Night – Important
    a.  Jackets & Ties, Tuxes etc for men.  Medals are encouraged.
    b.    Food – we will have a very nice dinner. There are 4 choices for entree:  Prime Rib, Petite Filet Mignon, Crab Stuffed Flounder or Chicken Saltimbocca.  We will order a percentage of each and you can choose what you want at the table. If the kitchen is out of your first choice go with the second etc. We did this with C Rations many years ago and it worked – we may have been hungry but we survived.
  7. This is very important.  We are all in our 60’s and 70’s. Everyone will have to pitch in as we always have. If you see a job that needs doing – do it. Take 2 salt tablets and Drive On!

Many thanks to Charlotte, Rick, Judy and Dickie for all their work.    Land of the Free Because of the Brave

2012 Golden Brigade Reunion – Biloxi, Mississippi

OK folks – Rick Randazzo and Dickie Keaton; under the watchful eye and supervision of Charlotte Randazzo, have put together a wonderful program for the 44th anniversary of the Brigade’s deployment to Vietnam. They have worked hard to provide an expanded program for the family. Both Rick and Dickie have told me that the hotel has vowed to do it’s best to accommodate us in a highly welcoming and professional manner.

So far, they have bent over backwards to accommodate us. As we always do, we will need everyone who is able to volunteer to do various tasks. This is the way we keep costs down and spread out the work load. Donations will be gratefully accepted to defray costs.

Rick knows everyone in Biloxi so he is making sure that we are well treated. The hotel is right on the beach so – ladies bring your swim suits and suntan lotion. Us able bodied Macho men will drag, – and I mean literally drag- a cooler full of beverages and other items down to the beach. Weather should be warm but not too hot.

Dates: April 26 – April 28, 2012

Hotel: The Treasure Bay Hotel and Casino, 1980 Beach Blvd, Biloxi, MS 39531. Call 1-800-747-2839 for reservations and mention “82nd Airborne Golden Brigade Reunion”. Reunion registration: $82 per person – includes 2 dinners, Friday lunch, hospitality suite with all the usual beverages and finger food as well as incidentals. Click here for the registration Form.

A 2/505 mini-reunion

Category: All Messages,Reunion – Ron Yorkovich 4:07 pm

Would there be any interest in a mini-reunion for A Co. 2/505, 3rd Bde 82nd Airborne in the NY, Mass., NJ, Penn., Conn area? I know some would like to go to the national reunions but distance may have been a problem.  Maybe a central location in the NY area may work out.  Just a thought.

GBC Updates

Category: All Messages,Announcements,Reunion – Ron Yorkovich 9:57 am

Troopers,

Just to keep everyone in the loop:

  • In Reno, we have Thursday night dinner lined up at Louis’ Basque Corner – about 3 1/2 blocks from the Silver Legacy.
  • Dickie Keaton and I are working on a postcard to send out to everyone to encourage them to come – $30 a head for a fantastic dinner.
  • Panther Association is planning to be there too, but things are not firmed up.
  • If you are going to be there, let me know so we can make sure we have enough space- we had a great time there in 2004 and these people are wonderful to work with.
  • I have received 288 glasses like we had done for our 42nd reunion toast to the ladies. They are simple but elegant – “MG Alexander R. Bolling Jr. – Night Rider” on 1 side and and an 82nd patch with ‘Golden’ above it and ‘Vietnam’ below it.
  • On the painting, we are at about $13,000 in donations. They are slowing down but still coming in.   Ken Steelman is working with the artist to get us something to post on the website to hopefully speed things up.
  • Gen Bolling is not doing well. Notification of his passing will be posted here and by email.

Thanks to you all – you are great guys.

2010 Summer Newsletter

Category: All Messages,Chapter News,Reunion – Ron Yorkovich 2:41 pm

Fellow Troopers of the Golden Brigade:

Some of you know that I was elected as Secretary of the Golden Brigade Chapter at our April reunion in Dallas.  In this capacity, I will be sending newsletters periodically.   I am anxious to get your feedback so let me know what you think and what you would like to see in future updates.  If you have pictures, articles, ideas, commentary, etc, please contact me by reply e-mail.

We would like to make these updates a two-way communication. To do so, we need to hear from you guys. What to send in? Anything significant to you or that you want to share with us. Mar-riage, anniversaries, birth of grand children, great grand children, or children (we really want to hear about them, you old rattlesnakes!), promotions, and retirements. Caught a huge fish? Nailed a record buck? Suc-cessful recovery of illness? Share your good news.

Please let us know if you hear of the death of a fellow Golden Brigade trooper, chapter member or not. Lost track of a buddy from our Viet Nam days? Send in his name, unit, dates served in „Nam. Anything that may jog the memory of one or more of us will help.

42nd REUNION UPDATE

For those of you who missed it—you missed out on a super good time. The usual suspects were there, as well as many new faces. It was held at the Hilton DFW Lakes Con-vention Center again. They treated us extremely well and it is likely to be the site of fu-ture reunions as it is centrally located for all of us as well.

One of the main highlights was the hotel graciously allowing us to set up LZ Bolling right in front of the lobby. It was a one ship LZ, surrounded by trees on 3 sides and a parking lot on the fourth. I believe it was Ken Steelman who located a functional vintage Huey and got the OK from the hotel, Fire Dept, Police Dept and the FAA (the hotel is only about a five minute flight from the DFW runways) to have it flown in and stay over night.

General Bolling, the Color Guard from Ft. Bragg, the Chorus members and many of the troopers met it on arrival. All were greatly impressed by the pilot’s skill in getting in and out safely. The sight, sound and smell of a working Huey brought back many memories for a lot of us. Many of us also signed the canvas seats and firewall.

When the Huey came in, it circled the hotel at the 7th floor level then set down in the LZ. When it took off, it circled again. What a surprise it must have been for the non-GBC guests!

GBC MEMORIAL ARK

Noted artist Wendy Yothers and about a dozen other artists and companies created a memorial for the Chapter commemorating our service in Viet Nam. Since we are a last man chapter it has a bottle of premium bourbon and a hand blown shot glass emulating a parachute shape and engraved with All The Way on the bottom. The ark itself is made of various hardwoods and is about 3 ft square. The front has engraved jump wings, CIB and CMB on it as well as the names of our fallen comrades. Inside are numerous small drawers to hold any small mementos you guys may want to send in. Steel from shot out rifle barrels provide the fittings and accents. The travelling case is equally impressive. It will be with us at all reunions until the last man can toast those who have passed with the bourbon and shot glass. Words cannot adequately describe these cases. YOU MUST GO TO FUTURE REUNIONS TO SEE IT. It is truly an impressive work of art.

SYMPOSIUM AT REUNION

We had two guest speakers at the symposium. Jug Burkett, author of “Stolen Valor”, spoke about his book which exposes the many falsehoods spread about Viet Nam vets as well as the many phonies out there disre-specting our sacrifices and service. There are so many of them out there—I have even heard that nearly double the number of men and women who actually served are claiming service in “Da Nam”. Even politicians of all parties!! Look before you vote. This book is a must read for all Americans not just veterans.

Our second guest was Albert Nahas. He is the author of “Warriors Remembered” a 208 page, 11.5x 11.5 hard cover photo documentary of Viet Nam Veteran Memorials from all over the country. He highlights 50 of the 1000 or so in existence. Many are incredibly touching and heart rending and full of love for us and our fallen brothers. The book should be out this fall. You can either use the attached order form or keep in touch with your local book seller. It is truly a unique and moving publication. For a preview and ordering information go to:  http://www.warriorsremembered.com/. Inquiries and bulk orders, e-mail to: mailto:warriorsremembered@gmail.com.

THOUGHTS & THANKS

The Memorial Dinner was excellent and well attended. Color Guard from Ft. Bragg, part of the 82nd Choir, a piper, much pomp and ceremony , good food , better friends, memories and lies swapped. It does not get any better than that. Plan to attend in 2012-you won’t be sorry.

Many thanks to all who made this reunion possible ; including but not limited to MG Bolling, Carl Bludau, Rich O?Hare, Bob Murrill, Ken Steelman, Ron Yorkovich, Mike Hood and the troopers and families in attendance. A special thanks to Dick and Judy Keaton for hosting the hospitality room. Also special thanks to Rick and Charlotte Randazzo for putting on the fish fry and shrimp boil lunch. Outstanding! My apologies to those I have omitted. Bad memory and worse note taking on my part.

WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT

Carl Bludau reports that we have enough donations to sponsor about 25 Wounded Warriors so far and he ex-pects more donations to come in. Make checks payable to: 82nd Education Fund Wounded Warrior. Send your tax deductible donations to:

PAST NEWS

At the 2009 convention Darrell Ormes (B-2-505) was awarded his Silver Star for actions on the night of Feb 28—Mar 1,1969. 40 years late but still sweet. Congratulations from all of us.

2010 CONVENTION
If you are planning to attend this year, you need to get your hotel room and registration in now! It look like most if not all 82nd units will be Stateside by then and many will be there. I?m hearing 600-1000+ troopers and families ! I haven?t been to that part of the country, but I hear West Virginia is spectacularly scenic and worth spending some time in. Plus lots of local attractions.

SOCIAL SECURITY UPDATE

If you served between 1957 and 2001, those quarters apply to your total S/S benefits. You must apply for them, it is not automatic. Contact your local office or go to: http://www.ssa.gov/retire2/military.htm. You must bring a copy of your DD-214 to the S/S office. To get a copy of DD-214, „Google? veterans records. There are several useful websites to help you. This may not help much for draftees and one hitch guys, but it may make a big difference to those who had multiple enlistments but didn?t go the full way. Not sure about career guys. This benefit should be auto-matic—we should not have to ask for it.

42nd Golden Brigade Reunion – April 16-18, 2010 – Dallas

Category: All Messages,Reunion – Ron Yorkovich 9:24 pm

Dear Troopers,

We will only have one 42nd Anniversary so mark your calendars and plan to be there.  We encourage Troopers to bring their families. Bob Murrill (1/508) is coordinating one of the most fantastic gatherings that you will probably ever experience. For those who have never been to one of our events, it is a time to enjoy friendship, tell some lies and renew or make new friends. We had our 40th in the same hotel and it was fantastic!!!! We are also working on some special guests but nothing has been finalized at this point.

NASCAR has pulled a slick one on us. We originally scheduled our event so there would be no conflict. After we had everything arranged, they changed their schedule so this puts extra pressure on us to make early hotel and travel reservations.

The Hotel Dallas Fort Worth Hilton Lakes Executive Conference Center is a beautiful, high class hotel located next to historic Grapevine, Texas. Check out this website (www.hiltondfwlakesecc.com)!!!  The hotel is bending over backwards to accommodate us and I guarantee that you will not be disappointed! Here’s what it looks like at this point:

  • Rates Deluxe Rooms are $92 per night + taxes. Rate is good for a limited number of rooms on Thursday (15th). A major block on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Normal rates are $207 – $225 during the week so you get an idea of the kind of place we have no poncho liners on the ground here and you will have to bring your own leeches and mosquitoes as none are supplied!
  • Welcome Lunch, Friday Noon: The Austin Ranch. Rick Randazzo and his family and friends are going to treat us to a Shrimp and Crawfish boil.
  • Welcome Dinner, Friday Night: The Austin Ranch next to the hotel – meet, greet, renew friendships and make new ones. We will have a Texas style Barbeque and maybe some other surprises. We are planning on a Country Western Band so get you cowboy boots shined up.
  • Activities Available (Additional Cost): Spa, 2 Golf courses near the hotel, Horseback Riding, Fishing in a private pond (no charge) etc.
  • 82nd Chorus will be invited to perform on Friday and Saturday, dependent upon combat situation and their schedule.
  • Hospitality Room is on the first floor of the hotel.
  • Magnificent Gala Reunion Dinner,Saturday Night: DJ will play nice dinner music in the hotel ballroom. Jacket & Tie/Tux/Blues/Class A required.
  • Free Shuttles to and from the Airport – 10 minutes away. Call 817-481-8444.
  • Free Shuttles to the Golf courses and local shopping in historic Grapevine.
  • Registration Cost $82 per person, but generous donations are greatly accepted/needed to defray actual costs which will be much higher due to what will be provided to you.

Your Obligations:

  • We need to have an accurate count so don’t be a slacker and wait till the last minute. We only have a limited number of rooms blocked at this point so call   1-800-984-1344 and mention 82nd Airborne-Golden to get this fantastic rate. One night is non refundable should you cancel later. We have just increased the block and rooms are going very fast.
  • Room Reservations should be made by January 31, 2010 to assure that you get hots and a cot. The earlier the better as the hotel will start releasing the block after that time.
Send in your $82 registration per person and donations ASAP – that means now!
If you have special needs such as a handicapped accessible room, please let the hotel know when you make your reservation.
  • Jingle up your long lost buddies and get them there – no sweat, GI!
  • We’ll need volunteers to help with various activities such as sign-in, manning the hospitality suite, picking up supplies, making table arrangements, etc. We’re all getting older so the more hands the better.
  • Save up your MPC and mark your calendars – do it now!!
  • Start doing pushups etc. so that you are in shape for the 5 mile run that Mike Hood and Dickie Keaton are going to lead each morning at 0-dark thirty. If I’m not there, start without me!
If you were a Military Intelligence guy, that means about 5:30 AM in civilian time . . . just kidding!
  • Lastly, if you haven’t renewed your dues, do it now. Complete this membership application or give Rich a call on the horn (804.598.4805) for an application. Virtually everyone has signed up as a life member to cut down on the paperwork. We don’t want to have to chase you down the Candy Stripe for a few bucks . . . but we might!

Hope to see you all soon. Let’s make our 42nd a time for you and your families to remember for many years.

Check back here frequently for updates.

The Golden Brigade will host a hospitality suite starting on Wednesday night in the William Penn Room on the 2nd floor.  We will have a nice reception in the Penn Room starting at 6:30 PM on Thursday night with an open bar and hors d’ourves so as to enjoy each other’s company and meet new friends. Chapter News- September 4, 2006

Category: All Messages,Chapter News,Reunion – Ron Yorkovich 6:41 pm

2006 Orlando Reunion    The convention in Orlando was great.  We had an excellent showing of our chapter members and their ladies. Importantly, we had a number of first timers show up and they were welcomed with open arms.  Many new friends were made. Thursday night was a fun time as we all went to Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede.  This was a very patriotic horse show with an excellent dinner.

Veteran’s Day, Washington, DC    Men, this is our day!  I urge you to make it to DC for Veteran’s Day.  Check your Paraglide for details.  If you’ve lost it or thrown it away, let Rich O’Hare know and he will send you the info.  We lay wreaths at numerous graves and monuments throughout Arlington Cemetery and then at the WWII, Korean and Vietnam memorials.  Don’t miss it!

All American Week – May, 2007    It is unknown if there will be an All American Week this year due to the deployment of the 82nd. The 3rd Brigade (505) is now in Iraq and the 4th Brigade (508th) and the division headquarters will be going to Afghanistan later this year. We’ll just have to wait and see but our prayers should be with these brave young troopers.

Convention- August 15-19, 2007    Next year’s convention will be held in Harrisburg, PA at the Hilton Harrisburg and Towers. Reservations (717) 233-6000 mention code (82ABN).  Rates are $99 plus tax.  Check your Paraglide for more details as the time grows closer.  We had our 30th Anniversary there and it is a great hotel.  The Central PA Chapter did a great job and treated us very well.  I again urge you to mark your calendars and make it to this wonderful event.  We will again put together a fun evening on Thursday night just for Golden Brigade heroes and their ladies.

Our 40th Anniversary – August 13 – 16, 2008    The 2008 Convention will be held in St. Louis, MO.  Believe it or not guys, this will be the 40th Anniversary of the Brigade’s deployment.  We are already in the preliminary stages of planning a gala event similar to the 30th and 35th Anniversary celebrations that we have held.  It will be on the Thursday night of the convention and will be a very nice affair. If you attended either the 30th or 35th you have a very fine memory of them.  More will come as our plans move along but do mark it on your calendar.  We are not getting any younger and you owe it to your self to celebrate your heroic service to this Country and our fine Division.

Tom and Mary Holtzman Bring the Entire Family to Orlando    Tom is a relatively new member of the chapter and attended the convention in Milwaukee last year.  He and Mary were welcomed as all new troopers are and decided to bring the whole family to Orlando this year.  The Holtzman’s had and entourage of 12 including children, spouses of the children and grandchildren. It looked like everyone had a great time.  All the Way, Tom and Mary!

That’s it Troopers,

38th Renunion Orlando

Category: All Messages,Reunion – Rich 11:50 pm

Dear Troopers and their friends and families:

This convention looks like it will be a very big one for Golden Brigade troopers.  Many, many folks have called saying that they will be there.  I urge you to make you hotel reservations quickly – information is on page 54 of your Spring Paraglide.

As usual we will have a fantastic hospitality suite starting on Wednesday evening where you and your family can come together to tell lies, renew relationships of many years ago and meet new friends.  There is nothing better!

Over the past several years we have hosted a dinner get together on Thursday night where we can spend some special time together.  This year will be no different but we have a great event that all will enjoy.  We will be going to Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede where you will be fed more food than a starved 19 year old infantryman could eat and be greatly entertained with a fantastic horse show with a very patriotic theme. Dinner also includes beer, wine or soft drinks.  I’ve been there and we really enjoyed it as I’m sure that you will.  It is geared for all ages so bring the kids and grand kids.

The cost is only $30 for adults and $20 for kids 12 or under.  Since we have to book and pay in advance, please send your money along with the coupon below as soon as possible.  Don’t delay – now is a good time to slide the check in the mail.  If you have not renewed your membership – download an application from our website, stroke a check for $100 for life membership and be done with it.  No sweat GI – you number 1.

I got a call from MG Bolling this evening.  He is doing fine.  Many of you don’t know that he was a real hero in WWII, having been wounded, captured and escaped from POW camp not once but twice.  He is going to Germany this August for 2 weeks where they will be filming a documentary about his ordeal so he won’t be at the convention.  He sends his best to all (and by the way said he would send a donation as he always does).

The Orlando hotel seems to be filling up fast.  Carl Bludau called me this morning to inform me of that.  We will have a very large turnout so don’t delay.

38th Golden Brigade Reunion

Category: All Messages,Reunion – Ron Yorkovich 7:35 pm

Gentlemen,

My buddy Butch recommended Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede for our Orlando Thursday night dinner (August 10th) .  It is a great show and for groups it is about $30 a head/$20 for kids.  It also includes 2 beers or 2 glasses of wine.  I think we are going to get a very big turnout this year and this would be a fun night for all involved.

Please review and give me your thoughts.
