Comments: am responding to mike garrow regarding ortega and conde… never understood why noone went up that river to avenge ortega and several others who were ambushed that day. as i recall he was real short. i was with 3rd platoon d company and was part of the operation the day that conde was killed along a bunker line about march of ’69. several others were kia that afternoon also….have no idea about callahan or murray, but think often of both of them…callahan was mr. gung ho for sure. i can see murray now saying”proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance”!!! several of us in delta company are staying in touch who were in the third and fourth platoon….ron vitale, pete watkins, carl goulas, billy simmons, fred tappen, bruce king, leslie hayes. believe ortega was second platoon.Â

Comments: I was deployed with the initial unit(s) to Viet Nam in February 1968. I was assigned to Company C, 307th Engineer Batallion. My last days in country was with “C” Company 1/503rd or 1/505th (can’t remember which), in the “Valley” as a demolition team leader. We were surrounded by NVA’s and were finally pulled out by a sortee of helicopters.

Comments: Thanks so much for this excellent website. I was Artillery Recon Sergeant with D Co 1/505th, and later worked Artillery Laison in the Battalion TOC. Our Company CO was Cpt Callahan, and the Field First was SFC Murray. Has anyone heard from them? SSG Ortega, who was killed during river operations (Jan-Feb 69?)was a good friend, as was SSG Conde. Welcome home to all. Every day we live beyond RVN is a gift from God. Be well and enjoy the gift, and remember our absent friends.
